The Mustang II was produced for only five years, from 1974 thru 1978, The 1974 Mustang II received Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year award. The Mustang II sold more than 400,000 units in its first year. With new environmental and safety regulations along with the Arab oil embargo the Mustang II was designed for a market that was focused on economy and safety. For 1975 the Mustang got its V8 power plant back, the Cobra II was offered starting in 1976, and for 1978 the King Cobra came to market.

There were only three packages that limited the choice of engine. The MPG package was limited to a four cylinder engine, while the Mach 1 was available with any engine other than the four cylinder. The 1978 King cobra was the only Mustang II offered no engine other than the 302 V8.
